2024 Planting Plans

1/5/2024

It is the perfect time to dream of your spring
and summer gardens.

If you are gardening with me… This month's goal is to start a list of all the flowers/veggies you'd like to try or grow again! We will talk more about garden layouts in February, so just getting a seed list together is a great goal. Remember to include pest control flowers and herbs! (more details on this below)

I like to intensively plant each bed and rotate in new plants each season. It saves me hours on weeding and the plants actually thrive in close quarters protecting each other.

Whether you have 12-inch pots, one bed or multiple beds intensive planting your garden will mean much larger harvests in 2024. Seasonal planting plans will also provide an abundance of fresh produce all the way through Winter.
Intensive planting plans can help protect your garden from pests and disease, plus reduce your watering needs.

All of my bed layouts including a seed list are at the end of this article.

This growing season I have more room than ever. So I’ll be adding in a cut flower garden. In years past, I’ve interspersed my flowers throughout my veggie garden and I will continue to do so for pest control. But this year I’m also dedicating some beds for cut flowers.

Want to plant more this year? New raised garden beds and soil can be pretty expensive.

I didn't want to add too much to the cost of my garden so we found free and low cost filing cabinets on FB marketplace and doubled my planting space. They’ve been a wonderful addition. Made from galvanized steel which will hold up for years to come. I’ll talk more about how to increase yields and save on soil costs soon!

When starting your seed list be sure to factor in beneficial organic pest control methods.

I always plant trap plants (flowers) at the corner of each bed. And to either side of the trap flowers I place my herbs. Then a row of chives and or green onions form a perimeter of the beds. From there I start working in my small plants, medium and then large plants at the middle of each bed. Planting my beds this way provides easy pest prevention and management all season.

The smell of herbs, garlic, chives and green onions prevent many bugs from ever entering my garden beds. I do have aphids that like my fruit trees and have to hose them off the trees often.

Happy planning! Let me know in comments what your plant list looks like or what questions you have.

If you're new here. Don't let my 2024 planting plan scare you away. I started with a simple herb garden in 2019. I was just as happy in my 2019 small garden as I am in my 2024 large kitchen garden. A garden of any size brings joy into my life and I hope it will to yours as well!

Which plants do you want to add this year?
